Alana

This is my first photo session with a special needs child. I was very excited to work with Alana, who has Autism. She was very shy at first, but she warmed up to me and the camera and I was able to be sneaky and get some great shots. Here are a few of my favorite.

Beautiful Marci, what gorgeous eyes she has and you obviously had her completely at ease with you. You're a natural.

Thanks! Although I would like to do all kinds of portrait photography, I would like to specialize in Special Needs. I know how difficult getting a great picture of your "special child" can be...and there isn't many photographers (at least here) who fill that need.

Autistic kids are particularly hard because they avoid eye contact. You have to warm up to them and when they do make it...it's super brief so you have to be ready and anticipate it. I think it took about 30 minutes for me to catch Alana just once. It's kind of a fun little game I played with her. Plus, I'm excited to give her mom a picture of her beautiful daughter that she probably hasn't had.
